For fifty years, that strait was a divide. Finland carved its own path as a Nordic democracy. Estonia was swallowed by Soviet occupation — cut off, silenced, and pulled in a direction its people never chose.

That changed in 1991. Estonia reemerged, reclaimed its place among European nations, and joined NATO in 2004. Finland stayed neutral — until 2023, when a single decision rewrote the map. Finland joined NATO, and the Gulf of Finland in an instant became something it had never been before: a NATO-controlled chokepoint, with allied territory on both shores.

Today, those 80 kilometers are no longer a divide. They are a link. Two nations, one language family, one stretch of water — watching the same horizon, protecting the same strait.
